NCLB Qualified Teachers

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires all teachers, teaching in the content areas it identifies as core academic areas, to demonstrate that they have sufficient content knowledge in that subject. Teachers in Nebraska met this requirement by holding the appropriate endorsement for the courses/classes taught, by successfully completing the HOUSSE process, or meeting Nebraska’s testing requirement for teachers at the elementary education level of instruction. The chart below provides the statewide number and percentage of courses taught by NCLB Qualified Teachers in each of the NCLB content areas.

NOTE: NCLB Qualified Teacher data presented here includes Special Education teachers.

NCLB also requires States to identify the number and percentage of NCLB qualified teachers in high- and low-poverty elementary schools and high- and low-poverty secondary schools. To define 'high- and low-poverty' schools, all schools are ranked by the percentage of their enrollment eligible for free or reduced lunches in the School Lunch Program. This list is then divided into quartiles. The schools in the quartile with the highest percentages of poverty are the 'high-poverty' schools. The schools in the quartile with lowest percentages of poverty are used for the comparison.

NOTE: Schools are identified as Secondary if they offer 12th grade, or Middle-Schools offering grades 7 & 8 only. All other schools are identified as Elementary.
